There are several discussions regarding new asset classes or sources of return triggered by the uncomfortable situation within the asset class bonds. Investing in bonds at a reasonable risk seems to have only one outcome: a negative real return. After having enjoyed the bull market in bonds for the last 40 years, the expected return of this core asset class is close to the lowest it has ever been. This presents a challenge, as cash is also no longer an attractive place to be either.It is important to review the structure by considering inflation, which is back in the investor's scenario. One option is a higher allocation to real assets and considering higher exposure to areas or regions that are under owned by investors and provide some diversification. In addition, a more active allocation is important to profit from opportunities and avoid staying in negative trends for too long.

Last December in our market review we have discussed the benefit of a diversified exposure to precious metals. Often the only position under this category is in gold. Without going into detail, the other precious metals have interesting characteristics in the current environment. They are exposed to their respective investment cycles and industries with some precious metals likely to benefit from the current focus on sustainability themes. Last December we highlighted Platinum which has clearly offered a strong performance against Gold since December.
